The Ultimate Playlist

Ok people I don’t ask for much… Not of YOU anyway.  Ok Ok so I’m a bit needy in most aspects of life, but it’s not my fault I’m the baby of the family.  So what do I need?  It’s simple really.

Take a look at my running playlist:

I have just over 3 hours on my playlist and unfortunately that is not going to be enough time to get me through the marathon.  During the Austin marathon, I had to listen to my playlist twice.

So what does this have to do with you?  Well, my friend Bianca mentioned that she was going to ask all of her friends to tell them the ONE song they couldn’t live without on their playlist.  The ONE song that motivates you like no other.

So, I’d love to hear YOUR one song and  why it motivates you.  If there is a story behind why you love the song I’d love to hear that too.  The hope is that when I hear your song I’ll remember your story and remember why it motivates you and hope that it will get me going too.

The one song on my playlist that I’d say is the single most motivating is Ali in the Jungle.  I love the music, I love the beat and I love the words.  If you listen to the words you can’t help but apply it to running.  To me, it means that it takes a lot to get where you’re going.  It doesn’t matter if you start off weak,  if you put in the work you can get there.  You can do the impossible.  You CAN run a marathon.

So come on everyone, don’t be shy.  Help me create the ultimate Marathon playlist!  Comment away with your favorite song!

Hmm definitely one of my favorites is "My Body" by Young the Giant. When the chorus comes on I just can't move my legs fast enough "My body tells me no, but I won’t quit, cause I want more, cause I want more"

The new BEP song "Don't Stop the Party" ..
"Who's That Chick?" David Guetta & Rihanna
"You Make Me Feel" Cobra Starship

Those are all my favorites for right now - hope you find one you like! :)

My favorite right now is "Party Rock Anthem" by LMFAO.

My favorite motivational one is "Dynamite" by Tao Cruz because it was being played by a radio station as I ran down mile 12 in my first half marathon. It can always give me an extra boost thinking of running down the street in Akron.

The Killers-"All These Things That I've Done" because I got soul but I'm not a soldier. Best.Workout.Song.Ever!!! It gives me goosebumps every single time. Also, "Evil" by Interpol. I also love Sugarland, "Gotta be something more" and Keith Urban "put you in a song". So there you have it, my totally bizarro musical tastes ;)

Angie F said...

Ok, the Sugarland song is "Settlin'". Oh and one more "Given to fly"-Pearl Jam. I live this one because I saw this documentary about three lunatics who ran across Africa and this song was in the movie. Every time I hear it I think if someone can run across a CONTINENT I can definitely finish this workout!

The first time I ever ran 10 miles I was listening to The Killers' Hot Fuss album, particularly All These Things That I Have Done and the popular singles off that album. They just seemed to have the right rhythm for me. To add some weird variety, I also recommend Sweet Disposition by Temper Trap (on a coke commercial now), Home by Edward Sharp & the Magnificent Zeros (on an NFL commercial), some Black Keys (not peas), Florence & the Machine, and a song called Animal by Mike Snow. :) Happy running!

Guess I should have warned you that my boyfriend classifies my music as Dork Radio!

Okay, you asked for it, but I grew up in the 80s, remember? Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benetar. You can't not move with this song. It was also always in our warm up music for Varsity basketball - always got me going. Okay...so...will my 80s music be on your marathon playlist? Hahahahaha! Andrew is always listening to Headstrong by Trapt....it actually isn't bad.

I also like Dynamite. A silly one that is motivating me right now is the "End Credits" from the newest Pirates of the Caribbean. Great music, makes me feel like I can conquer anything.

most of the music i listen to running would probably make your pop music ears bleed. but one of my favorites, ( i will listen to it two or three times in a row on a run) is Rise Against Swing Life Away. Listen to the lyrics I think you will love them.

I'm not a huge Eminem fan, actually most of the time I hate his music because of his personality, but his song "Till I Collapse (featuring Nate Dogg)" motivates me like nothing else. I often hit repeat at the end. It's a great song when you're in a good running groove in the middle of your run.

'Cause sometimes you feel tired,
feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
and just pull that shit out of you and get that motivation to not give up
and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse'

When I posted something like this on Facebook you told me the Ali in the Jungle song and I absolutely love it. It's always on my running mix and I shared it with all of my friends and they love it as well! I channel your determination every time I hear it!

Also, one more CD that is great to listen to while running (I often throw the whole CD on my running mix) is Girl Talk- "All Day" Bonus: he is from Pittsburgh!

The two songs that come to mind are:
Till I Collapse- Eminem
Training Montage-Vince Dicola(really anything from Rocky IV sountrack)

I just posted a playlist on my blog (although my blog isn't as awesome as yours!) here's some suggestions:
rock that body- black eyed peas
savior- rise against
dog days of summer- florence and the machine
bad influence- pink
stronger- kanye

hope some of those work for you! Good luck!!

oh- and I dont necessarily have any one particular song or reason. I like to change it up. A LOT. I get bored easily. I actually love rockstar by N.E.R.D (warning-lots of bad words in it though!) it makes me feel strong and sassy and makes me run faster. especially where it says 'you don't succeed because you hesitate you think we're fly but we levitate'

I LOVE to listen to alternative music when I am running. Some of my faves are:

I Walk Alone - Green Day (this one has a good rhythm for pacing & I think the lyrics also apply for running)
Happy - Mudvayne
Ugly - The Exies
Sober - Tool
Stupify & Dropping Plates - Disturbed

Basically, I guess I just need to be yelled at when running...I like the rage and pushing through the pain, getting it out.

THE CLIMB!!! By Miley Cirus. yes, it is the perfect running song, in words, & beat.

okay - here comes a long one. I know you're only asking for ONE song, but I am a music freak. I absolutely live for music.

So, my ultimate running playlist song right now is "Cosmic Love" by Florence and the Machine. When the song gets to 1:24 its seriously makes me run harder.

Also, Florence and the Machines "Dog Days Are Over" is another good one. pretty much their whole album is amazing.

Okay - so a little off into the unusual... Dubstep is trending right now. Its a type of techno music that originated in europes "Jungle" and "Drum and Bass" techno scene. Dubstep has started to get popular and work its way into mainstream songs. Britney Spears and La Roux have both used dubstep mixes in some of their songs. The nice thing about Dubstep is that it runs between 138-142 beats per minute - so its really great if you're the type of runner that likes to pace yourself with music.

Anyhow, so here are some dubstep songs to check out:

The entire "UKF Dubstep 2010" Album is great. It was 90% of my Triathlon playlist. Its available on itunes for like $11 or something. Here are a few of my favorites from that album:

"Cracks" - Flux pavillion

"Hold On" Rusko

Okay, so then I am also a fan of repetitive techno, like house and trance. Its the beats. This song is FANTASTIC for running. Not to mention its called "Fire in Your New Shoes", which just makes me think of running so fast that my new shoes are on FIRE! (figuratively, of course, lol)
(available on itunes as: "Fire In Your New Shoes (Sultan & Ned Shepard Electric Daisy Remix) [feat. Martina of Dragonette]" )

Another song in the same genre. I really like this one because the lyrics are "move for me, I'll more for you..." its also really light and uplifting as far as techno goes.

"Move for Me" - Kaskade & Deadmau5

a more "poppy" techno song is DJ Rap's "Good to Be Alive". The name speaks for itself! Oh, and DJ Rap created the track herself, but also sings the vocal track, and I really like her voice. You might recognize it from the soundtrack from the movie "GO".

All of the following songs are on 5k & bike playlists from within the last year:

Dance/Pop Music -
"Remedy" (Avicii Club Mix) - Little Boots
"Handle Me" (Red One Mix) - Robyn
"I Feel It All" - Feist
"Gotta Get Through This" - Daniel Beddingfield
"No Sleep Tonight" - The Faders

Rap/R&B -
"Monster" - Kanye West ft. Nikki Minaj
"Fancy" - Drake Ft. T.I.
"Soundtrack to my life" - Kid Cudi
"Spaz" - NERD
"I Made It" - Kevin Rudolph
"All Eyes On Me" - Clipse
"Drop it Low" - Ester Dean
"Power" - Kanye West (this is the opening song on my current 5k playlist)
"All of the Lights" - Kanye ft. Rihanna

"Heads Will Roll" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"Strict Machine" - Gold Frapp
"Dance with Me" - The Sounds
"1901" - Phoenix
"Sleepyhead" by PassionPit

and of course some powerful females...
Old School Girl Rock / Riot Grrl:
"Volcano" - Veruca Salt
"Just a Girl" - No Doubt
"GO!" - Letters to Cleo
"Rebel Girl" - Bikini Kill
"Break Away" - Tsunami Bomb
"Moment of Weakness" - Bif Naked

okay, so I think I pretty much just gave you your entire marathon playlist, lol. Enjoy!

I have a lot of the same music you do. Some of the songs I love to listen to are:
Proud Mary- Tina Turner (really gets me moving)
Lose Yourself- Eminem
Old R.E.M- I Believe and Superman
Anything by Live- Pain Lies on the Riverside, Beauty of Gray

I love Greenday and old Pearl Jam stuff too- anything that gets my adrenaline going.

I even have Sir Mix a lot on there- Baby Got Back because it makes me laugh out loud.

You are off to a really good start!

Well I love to listen to music while I run, so here are some of my favorite tracks that get me pumped!
• (Drop Dead) Beautiful- Britney Spears featuring Sabi
• Trouble for Me- Britney Spears
• Up N Down- Britney Spears
• I Wanna Go- Britney (everything on her Femme Fatale album is VERY VERY runner friendly)
• Till the World Ends- Britney (the chorus does wonders for your energy)
• Marry the Night- Lady GaGa (a great way to start your run off 'cause it starts out slow, then gets bigger, better, and more exciting)
• Fashion of His Love- GaGa (has a cool '80s vibe)
• Scheiße- GaGa (great motivation)
• Just the Way I'm Not- All Time Low (very fun band, this is my favorite song at the moment)
• Young Forever- The Ready Set
• Countdown- Beyonce
• End of Time- Beyonce
• Freakum Dress- Beyonce (oldie but goodie)
• Hit the Lights- Selena Gomez (her new album, When the Sun Goes Down, is surprisingly good and very runner friendly, so I recommend that whole album)
• Blazin'- Nicki Minaj (I mean that's what you're doing right?)
• Love in America- JTX
• There and Back Again- Daughtry
• Hung Up- Madonna (really anything by Madonna)
• Rhythm Nation- Janet Jackson
So that's some of the highlights. Full albums that are perfect for running are Britney's Blackout and Femme Fatale* albums, as well as all three of GaGa's albums (The Fame, The Fame Monster, and Born This Way), I'm also lovin' Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday album. Hope this helps! :)

*Especially Britney's Femme Fatale, it's been my favorite CD since its release in spring, which is a LONG time for me, still haven't gotten tired of it!

Also, my mom's favorite song when she was running was "I Hate This Part" by the Pussycat Dolls. ;)
