Why Wait for Tomorrow

I'd just got home from an evening out with my family for George's birthday.  Happy Birthday George, we all love you!

Anyway, I'm tired and cranky and tired (I already said that didn't I?) and didn't feel much like blogging.  So, I turned to Facebook to clear my head and hopefully spark an idea for a blog post.  Wow did I ever get it.

My brother's wife's best friend's (did you follow that?) name is Gretchen.  Everyone say hello to Gretchen.

I honestly don't know Gretchen that well.  I know her as the best friend of a very important person in my life (my sister in law).  I do know enough, however, to know what a great person she is.  She's a DEVOTED mother, wife, sister, daughter (her mother is an angel) and friend.  She's always positive and upbeat and I'm pretty sure if I asked she'd give me (an acquaintance) the shirt off her back.  She's just one of those people that you know is good to the bone.

The most important thing that I can tell you about her is that she's YOU, she's me, she's the girl mom next door.  When I read her Facebook post I was both moved and inspired.  I hope you will be too.  Here it is.

I have a few extra minutes while Smurfs is being opened to talk about a recent ongoing accomplishment...I have been putting it off as I don't want people to think that I am bragging! I have always been fairly thin with an athletic build...I would roll my eyes when people would say "just you wait until you get older" when discussing weight gain/loss. I was 110 lbs when I got pregnant with Dylan and gained 59.5 lbs. It took me 6 short months to get down to 115. I was 115 when I got pregnant with Gracie and I gained 63.5 pounds. It took almost 1.5 years to lose it with her but I did and got down to 115-120. I have always been a good and dedicated to exercising. Due to some circumstances (meningitis and broken heel from softball) I packed on about 20 lbs and was 140 when I got pregnant with Mag. I again gained 60 lbs and the smallest that I got down to was 160 before I got pregnant with Sheldon...at which the day I delivered I weighed a whopping 213 lbs. Now you all know that he was 11.9 and I think I was down 30 lbs in 24 hrs. At my 6 week follow up I was down to 159. I was so excited...I swore I was going to keep losing it but that wasn't what happened. Every month the scale kept inching up and when it got to ___, I KNEW I needed to do something drastic. I first went to my MD who I tried to get to prescribe me phentermine...he sincerely told me that I got this and I just needed to "quit fueling the tank" and regretfully told me no medications. I told him I needed to exercise and he stopped me and said "gretchen, while that helps, colts linebackers run 6 to 7 miles a day and are morbidly obese." That was my AH HA moment. So exactly 7 days after that conversation and 7 days before Thanksgiving, I began to cut calories. OH EM GEE...the first week was B-R-U-T-A-L! However, Thanksgiving I put half of what I normally put on my plate and only ate half of that as I was FULL and I STOPPED! I am eating <1200 calories a day and while I hate it, I am seeing results. I have lost a little over 22 lbs and I am back down to where I was at my 6 week follow up (now you fill in the number!). My 14 jeans were also getting a bit tight and last night I bought a size 10! It has been hard HOWEVER when you see results it makes it easier. I really like weight watchers and when I had 20 lbs to lose with Gracie I did it on weight watchers in 8 short weeks BUT this time in my life, I was so afraid that I wouldn't document points as sometimes I feel like I am flying by the seat of my pants. I am going to start weight watchers now and also exercising. This weight loss is without anything other than my day to day activities and cutting calories. I may never be back down to 120 but I am hopeful for 130. I am posting this tonight, not fishing for compliments or anything but I just wanted my FB friends to know. I had a few people tell me to wait until the New Year to start and oh my goodness...I am SO GLAD as if I would have waited until the New Year I would have wished I would have started the week before Thanksgiving. So don't put off tomorrow what you can start today!!

Thank you Gretchen for being honest and so real.  I hope you know how many people you've probably touched by sharing your story.   If there's one thing I hope EVERYONE takes away from this message it is, why wait for tomorrow?  You'll always look back and wonder what could have been if you started today.

Congrats to you Gretchen, you're amazing.  Keep it going girl!
