I’m a Runner

Sometimes I will spend all day taking pictures for my blog or be blogging in my head while I’m running or see something that automatically gives me a great idea for the blog.  Other times I’ll go about my daily life oblivious to my blog.  I don’t take a picture or even think about what would be a good blog topic for the day.   One guess as to what kind of day it was today. 

Enter… I’m a Runner Runner’s World style.

I got into running about one and half years ago when my friend asked me to sign up and train for a half marathon with her.

My job as a mom is the most rewarding job I have ever had.  It requires a lot of hard work and patience, but the rewards you get are 10 fold what you put in.

I’ve done 3 half marathons and became a marathoner last week when I completed the Livestrong Austin Marathon (recap here).  Nothing like running a new distance because you’re guaranteed a PR (personal record).  4:58:19

My goal this year is to complete 12 “races” either running, cycling, swimming or any combination of the three.  I have 10 races planned but I’m willing to switch it up as I need to.  My other goal is to continue to love it.  I don’t want training to ever feel like a chore. 

My shoulder and wrist were broken in June in a cycling accident.  My shoulder had to be “pinned” and required complete bed rest for 7 weeks to heal.  I’m currently in Physical Therapy with a pretty awesome therapist, Kelly

Here in Austin there are a lot of great opportunities to do races.  It was easy to plan out my race schedule.  There are a ton more races I could do if I had more time (and less kids).

I get so nervous the day of a race and sometimes the night before too.  I guess it’s a mix of nerves and excitement.  There is nothing like the adrenaline of a race to get you moving on those early mornings. 

I run in either tempo shorts or capri tights.  I generally like to wear my tights because you don’t get any of the “chub rub” on the inner thigh.  It rained the entire time during one of my half marathons and I wore shorts that rubbed my inner thigh raw.  Good times. Luckily for you there are no pics (of the rub that is..  there are always pics of me!


I’m a wimp when it comes to running in the heat.  I rather run when it’s four below zero and snowing than to run in eighty degrees and sunny.  True story.


I have a very supportive husband.  He never complains about entrance fees, hours missed together because of long runs, or me showing him when I’ve found a new muscle.  He supports and encourages me and I love him for it.

What to Do What to Do

I’m one week post marathon.  I intentionally took the whole week off because I wanted to focus on getting the house in order.  Enter out of town husband and serious GI problems and I’m no further ahead this week than last.  Ok maybe a tiny bit.

So what does this week bring?  I’m still not sure.  I don’t know whether to just buckle down and stay at home working on the house again this week or go back to the gym and work on the house as I can.  The disorganization of the house drives me NUTSO but I also have 2 events coming up which require training.

Austin Autism Society Bike Ride

Rock n Roll Dallas is March 27th and The Austin Autism Ride is April 3rd.  We (George and I) are planning on doing the 100K but we can always do less as we see fit. 

I know that I could go out and run a half marathon tomorrow but I’m really hoping to make my first Rock n Roll event a good one with a PR.  There, I’ve said it.  My previous record is 2:09:20 (a 9:53 pace).

It’s not going to be easy by any stretch so I really need to put in the work to do well and get that PR.  What to do, what to do?

What would you do if you were me? 

Go about daily life as normal and work on the house as I can or put off all my training until the house is finished?

Soccer Mom

Soccer Mom:  n. A middle-aged upper middle class woman who lives in the suburbs and devotes her life to her children. She carpools, drives them to soccer and little league, volunteers at their school, does snack days, and play dates. They drive in their mini vans and Suburbans with their fancy coffees and cell phones.

Precious Gift

As a mother there is NOTHING and I mean NOTHING more terrible than to imagine losing one of your children.  I can honestly tell you, I try very hard EVERY day to NOT take my children for granted.  I am well aware that each day, each moment and each memory with my children are gifts.  I was given three precious gifts and I cherish them.

Today I read a story of a mother who lost her precious gift, her baby, and it shook me to the core.  I read her story through tears, through anger and through fear.  You can read her story here and I encourage you to do so. 

I’m not asking you to read the story to break your heart or move you to tears (that will just happen).  I’m asking you to read the story and then ask yourself what YOU can do.  If this story doesn’t evoke something in you then I don’t know what will.  I’m not saying that this story will move you to do something for the family, but to do SOMETHING.  Maybe it’s calling your mother, maybe it’s telling your husband that you love him, or maybe it’s deciding you won’t waste the life that you’ve been GIVEN—a precious gift that none of us should take for granted.

I Just Do What I Can

So ever since the marathon I’ve been having “issues”.  Issues that I suspect are TMI for the blog.  Let’s just say my GI system hates me.  I know GI issues after long runs are common so I thought it was just that, but as the symptoms have persisted for 4 days, I’m convinced it is NOT marathon related.  If it is, MY BODY HATES MARATHONING. 

Anyway, I haven’t been able to eat.  I get nauseated very easily and I seem to wear out fast.  I know these symptoms sound akin to pregnancy, but don’t even go there.  I AM NOT PREGNANT NOR WILL I EVER BE AGAIN. So don’t even start that rumor.  This little family is complete, even if I do make cute kiddos.


So yeah, my house still looks like a bomb went off.  There are boxes and stuff everywhere.  I can only find the stuff I wonder why we ever moved and none of the stuff I really need.  I just do what I can when I can and TRY not to worry about the rest.

All About the Gear

Today was Nicholas’ first baseball practice.  He played t-ball in the past (one season) but has been waiting until he was old enough to play coach pitch. 

We pulled up to the field and Nicholas exclaims, “I’m the only one without baseball pants.”  Epic mom fail!  In my defense, I thought his old baseball pants would still fit him.  In reality when we put them on they were knickers and they were supposed to be full length pants.

I sent my son to BASEBALL practice in windpants and a LA Galaxy T-shirt.  If you know me, you know… I’m slipping!  Seriously, isn’t it all about the gear?  Ella and I think so.

Not only was he in a SOCCER shirt, but I couldn’t even find his cleats.  This WILL be remedied with a trip to Dick’s Sporting Goods tomorrow.

Clearly I need to get out of my post marathon funk.  Seriously bad things are happening.  Winking smile  Just keep this between you and me K?  Come tomorrow, no one will even remember this happened.

MY Inspiration

It all started with an overheard conversation at Nicholas’ soccer game.  I was probably going off about how I was going to ride an astounding *wink wink* 12 miles on my pink bike and another mom heard me.  She asked me if I was a rider and said that we should ride sometime together.  Sure I thought, she’ll never call, it was just small talk on the soccer field. 

But sure enough she did call and the rest is history.  That “other mom” is one of my good friends Tracey, a four-time marathoner and mother of three.  She is an inspiring woman—both an avid cyclist and runner.

When Tracey and I started to ride together she had just come off the 2009 Pittsburgh Half Marathon.  She said that she and her friends were going to do another Pittsburgh half (The Spirit of Pittsburgh) in the fall and I should consider training with her.  Haha I thought, I was no runner.  Honestly I wasn’t.  My longest run at that time was 5 miles and I had only done that a handful of times over the course of my LIFETIME.  I told her I hated to run, and I truly did. 

Somehow Tracey convinced me I could do it and we started training together in August of 2009.  You see, I haven’t been a runner for long (just one and a half years).  In fact, I’ve never even been an athlete.  I never played sports and I am the klutz of the family. 

Tracey was my inspiration. Her children are almost the exact same ages as mine, she’s an involved, devoted mother and she showed me that I could do it.  And in November of 2009 I ran my first half marathon. 


I’ve run two other half marathons since then including The Pittsburgh half marathon in May of 2010 and Decker Challenge this past December.

My point is, you don’t have to be born a runner.  You don’t have to be a long time runner or even an athlete.  All you need is a little inspiration.  For me that was Tracey.  She showed me you can be a mom (and a good one) and still be a runner.  She taught me how to train and how to love running. 

Thank you Tracey for giving me something in my life (besides my family) to be passionate about.  Thank you for being my mentor, but most importantly thank you for being my friend and CONSTANT support even from 1200 miles away.  YOU are my inspiration… and I just thought you should know.
